Will Wright, creator of SimCity and The Sims, will be the first game designer to be honored with a fellowship to The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
The BAFTA Fellowship is the highest honor the Academy can issue to an individual. Previously, those who were inducted into the Fellowship were from either television or the film industries, so this is a crystal clear example of the impact game designers have had in the entertainment business.
The first BAFTA awards for the game industry started in 2004.
Hilary Jones, BAFTA chairman, said, "Will’s immense, creative body of work and his continued contribution to the industry make him a most worthy recipient of the Fellowship and being such a pioneer, we are thrilled that he will be the first person to receive this honor."
The nominees for BAFTA Games Awards are listed here and the awards ceremony will take place on October 23rd in London.
