Since the launch of Nintendo’s Wii, reports of gamers incurring "Wii-elbow" and individuals losing weight through extensive play have become widely known. But playing with your Wii may be more beneficial than first thought, as the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) has determined that new video game technologies such as Nintendo’s motion controllers "may prove to be just what fitness experts are looking for to help their clients get more active."
One certified personal trainer with the ISSA, Nichole Snow, said, "The Nintendo Wii will show benefits for everyone. Whether you can sit down for the game or you have to be standing, it involves movement. The best part is its just fun–for everyone. Deconditioned and obese individuals will find it fun to play and gain aerobic movement out of the games. Seniors can enjoy gentle movements of bowling and golfing. Youth become a part of the game and don’t just turn into vegetables in front of the TV."
Snow pointed to the way the Wii can be accessed and used by anyone looking to get into shape. "Everyone can burn some calories and learn some good health habits from Nintendo Wii’s fitness, and the system is just too hard to pass up when watching anyone play."
Recent television ads have shown families engaged in physical activities while playing the Wii, although references to the benefits of exercise while gaming have not been specifically pointed out. However, this aspect of the Wii will certainly continue to be a selling point for those looking to stay or get into shape.
