Warner Bros. confirms next Batman Arkham installment, arriving this year

Time Warner CFO reveals game to release this year.

Given the way Batman: Arkham City ends, many gamers wondered if it would be the last title in the incredibly popular and lucrative series from RockSteady Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Luckily, Warner Bros. answered that question itself with a definite yes in a statement that sat unnoticed in its Q4 2012 earnings report for nearly a week.

The confirmation came when the floor was given to John K. Martin, Time Warner’s CFO. Martin predicted strong sales for the company’s 2013 lineup, which included a new entry in the Caped Crusader’s series.

“And we also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise,” he stated. “So all in all, we expect Warners to post another very strong year in 2013. And with a little luck, the year should be as good or maybe even a little bit better than 2012.”

Martin then quickly moved on to the publishing side of the company and didn’t deliver any further details on the new Arkham title such as a specific date, setting, or plot. According to sources close to VG247, Rocksteady Studios is not working on the sequel. It was also been confirmed months ago that Arkham Asylum and Arkham City writer Paul Dini would not be returning for a third installment of the franchise.

This could mean that the reported Silver Age Batman prequel game that was believed to be in development by Rocksteady is either a separate title or now being worked on by another studio. According to the report on the title’s existence, it would focus on Batman’s first encounter with the Joker and his team-up with Superman to form the Justice League.

While the Silver Age Batman game is said to arrive at 2014 the earliest, it could arrive in early 2014 and still fall under WBIE’s 2013 financial fourth quarter; making Maritn’s claim of a new Arkham title this year true.

We’ve contacted WBIE to see if we can gain any additional information on this story. If we find anything out, we’ll update the article post-haste. In the meantime, be sure to let us know your thoughts on the latest developments around the new Arkham game below in the comments section.
