Video Game Movies Bomb at Box Office

It’s no secret that movie adaptations of video games will probably never contend for an Oscar. German director Uwe Boll seemed to be in high hopes for his latest video game flick BloodRayne, which opened the same weekend as Grandma’s Boy, a comedy about a middle-aged video game tester, who moves in with his grandmother after getting kicked out of his apartment. Both movies failed to meet expectations, with an estimate putting BloodRayne at number 19 at the box office and receiving only $1.2 million in ticket sales over the past three days. BloodRayne is reported to have been produced with a budget of $25 milion and marketed at $22 million. Boll was understandably upset, saying that the film was canceled in many theaters at the last minute. “Romar [Entertainment] has not enough power.” Grandma’s Boy climbed up to number 13, beating both Harry Potter and Match Point this week.
