The bad news for the HD-DVD camp grows as Daily Variety has reported that Universal Studios’ exclusive contract to support HD-DVD has expired and has not been renewed.
This may indicate that Universal is now on the fence as far as its commitment to the underdog format, or may just be running late in working out the details for a renewal.
But considering the recent ship-jumping activity of Warner Bros to Blu-ray, a delay like this is probably causing a lot of heartburn and nervous jitters at Toshiba and Microsoft headquarters.
In addition to this, Paramount is reported to have an escape clause that would free them from their commitment to HD-DVD as well.
The movie theater curtains look as though they’re ready to close on HD-DVD, but Toshiba has vowed to fight on until their last breath for their DVD format.
