Earlier today, Sony announced that North American gamers will be unable to transfer UMD PlayStation Portable games to the PlayStation Vita. In Japan, however, PSP owners have had the ability to transfer physical titles to the PS Vita since December.
The UMD Passport program allows consumers to register their UMD games with their PlayStation Network accounts. Once the game has been registered, the synced title can be downloaded to the Vita for a fee.
This service has been available since December 6 in Japan. There has been no word on why the electronics giant dropped the service for North America. Although the program is not available, North American Vita owners can still access any digitally purchased PSP titles.
For now, owners of Sony’s first handheld will be unable to transfer their previous physical purchases to its successor. The PlayStation Vita will be released on February 22 in North America.
