UK Retail Store Chain Already Discounting PS3s

Less than two weeks after the PS3’s launch in the UK, reports have already indicated that the PS3 has already started to lose sales momentum. But an even more serious condition is appearing in UK stores as some retailers have already decided to discount the machine in order to boost sales of the PlayStation 3, according to a report by MCV.

WH Smith, a large chain retailer of books, magazines and entertainment items, says that it will be cutting the price of the PS3 from 425 GBP ($840 US) to 399 GBP ($788 US). The new price point is effective immediately and will end on April 10. The temporary price cut will only be honored at the WH Smith stores found throughout the UK.

In response to the dramatic discount, Sprong reports that Fiona Haldane, the head of GAME, UK’s largest game retailer said, "I can confirm that we will not be dropping the price of our PS3 and unfortunately we cannot provide a comment on how other retailers price their consoles."

While Sony continues to maintain that its PS3 is a very sought after item in the UK, the early discounts offered by WH Smith, and possibly by othern stores who follow their lead, is not a good sign that sales are going as well as Sony has indicated.
