Microsoft previously denied that there were any plans to release a HD-DVD device for its Xbox 360. Then only several weeks later, they announced that an external HD DVD device would be available at a later time. Since that time, the Big M has refuted stories that they would ever incorporate an internal HD DVD device in the 360. But as has been consistent with Microsoft,s denials, this aspect of the 360 may also prove to come to pass.
Mark Whittard, general manager of the Toshiba IS division in Australia, believes that the possibility is definitely a real one in comments made to IT Wire. He stated, "I would imagine that there are plans in place to put an HD DVD drive internally in future revisions of the product. They’re not speaking about it publicly at the moment but I would expect them to do that and fairly soon.”
Microsoft has stated that no 360 games would be developed for the HD DVD format, but a decision like this would not only hamper the ability of game developers to provide more content in Xbox 360 video games, but would offer an internal device, which for all intents and purposes, fails to be utilized as a working component for gaming purposes. If Microsoft does decide to go through with their support of an internal HD DVD drive, it will further the rivalry between itself and Sony,s support of Blu-ray technology.
