THQ has handed Sony an embarrassing body-slam with the announcement that it will not be publishing a PS3 version of WWE Smackdown! Vs Raw 2007. The title was in development, according to previous reports by THQ.
While the popular wrestling game will be absent from the PS3 platform, THQ will still be releasing the title for the PS2, Xbox 360 and PSP. The news of the cancellation of the title for the PS3 may be further confirmation of stories in the industry that developers are either pulling out or postponing development of PS3 titles. Developers are expressing a lack of confidence about Sony establishing a wide enough user base for games to be profitable.
Prior to the announcement of the termination of the PS3 WWE title, a posting made on THQ,s German website suggested that development for the PS3 version of the game was in serious trouble and lagging far behind in progress when compared to the other versions of the game.
The pullback of the THQ title from the PS3 lineup may not have any serious consequences for the bottom line of Sony,s accounting ledgers, but it will take off some of the shine that Sony is trying to attach to its next gen game console.
