Although Sony,s PS3 has yet to be released, Sony executives are already making comments as to their future plans for the Playstation 4.
Phil Harrison, vice president of Sony Europe said to Wired magazine that, “I,d be amazed if the PlayStation 4 has a physical disc drive.” CEO Ken Kutaragi said to BBC Online that, “My dream, and the dream of all my team, hasn’t finished. In fact we haven’t achieved even half of what we’re going to do. We want to lead with the PlayStation 3, and beyond that to the PlayStation 4 within the next decade." Kutaragi has already predicted a console life of at least 10 years for his PS3. Normal useful production times for game console lines are between 5-7 years.
With the ongoing advancement of electronics, the mechanical disk drive may very well be on its way out within a few years as solid-state technology of loading and saving data is developed and perfected.
