At the end of this morning’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime dropped a huge piece of news: The Last Story is coming to the West!
For those unaware, The Last Story is the second of three Japan-only RPGs that fans in the West have successfully campaigned for localization. The first, Xenoblade Chronicles, had a solid release date of April 6th also announced in the Nintendo Direct broadcast. The remaining title, Pandora’s Tower, is still Japan-only for the time being.
“Together, these two games level up the excitement for RPG fans in America,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “Whether roaming the vast landscape of Xenoblade Chronicles or choosing crossbows to battle with or against companions in The Last Story, gamers will recognize these titles as benchmarks for the genre.”
The size of this victory for Western fans cannot be understated. It seems Nintendo is FINALLY bucking the “leave Japan-only titles in Japan no matter how much Western fans want them” trend, and none too soon. Both of these games look like stellar RPG experiences, and leaving half of the world out of the fun would do them no justice. If Pandora’s Tower can make the trip to the West as well, then Nintendo will have more respect from their fans than perhaps ever before.
Keep on campaigning, Pandora’s Tower fans, there’s hope for you yet!
