Blizzard Entertainment’s smash-hit expansion pack, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, continues to shatter sales records. Blizzard announced today that the expansion has sold over 3.5 million copies since its launch in mid-January. This includes 1.9 million units sold throughout North America, 1.6 million in Europe, and 100,000 copies throughout Australasia. Blizzard also announced that World of Warcraft‘s worldwide subscriber based (which includes individuals who are paying the subscription fee, have an active prepaid card or those who have purchased the game and are on their free month) has reached 8.5 million players.
Mike Morhaime, President of Blizzard Entertainment, praised the games’ success. "We’re thrilled about the overwhelming response that we’ve received for The Burning Crusade. We have worked hard to build upon nearly every aspect of World of Warcraft with this expansion, and it’s gratifying to see that players and reviewers are enjoying the new content."
Blizzard continues expansion of the game’s worldwide access. An open beta/commercial release for the expansion was launched in Korea in February and plans to launch the game in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau in the coming months.
Back on January 16, a mere one day after the expansion’s launch, Blizzard announced that it had sold nearly 2.4 million copies of the WoW expansion. Clearly, enthusiasts of the game were ready to pounce upon the newly-released content as soon as it was made available.
