The game with the best soundtrack
As impossible as it is to ignore the masterpieces present in the Metal Gear Solid, Chrono-, Kingdom Hearts, and Silent Hill series, as well as anything the famed Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy series) has ever touched, the thunderous presence of Ko Otoni’s score for one of the greatest games of all time, Shadow of the Colossus, is unrelentingly moving, and, after plenty of YouTube research and memory-jogging, enough to earn today’s honor.
Not only do these fantastic compositions convey the breadth of emotions meant to be felt by the player — anticipation, inspiration, adventure, urgency, danger, hope, heroism, conquest, consequence, grief, regret, love… — but the entire collection maintains a consistent musical theme that feels absolutely intrinsic to the mysticism of the game’s setting and to the immersion in a narrative that is as well perfectly confluent with all other aspects of the experience. Additionally, the decisions of when to implement each piece and when to opt for stunningly effective, affective, and humbling silence magnify the excellence of the auditory work in Shadow of the Colossus, overall.
Enough for now. I suspect we’ll be seeing more of this game over the next 21 days.
