The game that scared you the most
I absolutely love horror games, but not because they frighten me. In fact, scary movies and games are mostly enjoyable to me because of the mystery involved and the way they present mostly warped, unusual, paranormal, and similar stories.
This, of course, makes me a big fan of the older Silent Hill games, despite the fact that they’re not actually frightening, per se. I was also a Resident Evil devotee up until recently, which was once a franchise that was actually scary in a very interesting way — by making me afraid I’d die and lose tons of progress.
The scariest game I’ve played, however, is probably Penumbra: Black Plague, a Lovecraft-like, first-person horror adventure set in the most harsh of locales — Greenland. Not only did it have a crazy and interesting plot, but its enemies were a terrifying and repulsive alien race that would NEVER fail to kill the protagonist in any encounter. There was no combat, just desperate struggles to escape. The game essentially made me mildly terrified to progress. In my review of Black Plague, I wrote, "Just for the record, I’d be scared of these guys even if I had a pair of Uzis."
A later game from the same studio, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, rivaled that terror, but couldn’t quite match it, perhaps due to the less familiar setting and more familiar avoidance process. Still, an honorable runner-up.
