The 30-Day Gamer Challenge – Day 19

Wind Waker

Favorite stress-relieving game

I’m not one to feel the effects of stress very often or very severely, so I rarely consider what game or games might be my go-to stress-relief games, if any.

I think for me, a stress-relief game would have to be about freedom and a lack of strict, driving goals. An open-world game seems to fit the bill, and now that I think of it, so would an open-sea game. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker delivers the best open sea that I’ve ever experienced, and simply can’t be topped when it comes to relaxation and stress relief. With its adventurous music and cool color palette, light art style, wide-open game structure, and plenty of world to explore — not to mention a simply incredible game at its core — Wind Waker is a nearly perfect stress-relief game.

Games like Red Dead Redemption, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Shadow of the Colossus (substitute horse for boat) have similar effects, but I think the open sea ultimately wins out.

Basically, the freer a game makes me feel, the better it will be at keeping me stress-free.
