A game that you wish you more people would’ve played
There are, of course, many games that I wish would have been played by a greater number of people. Whenever I encounter a surprising title that has flown entirely under everyone’s radar, that quiet (OK, maybe sometimes quite vocal) hope that the game will be "discovered" swells in my mind.
Beyond Good & Evil is one such game. It did receive the critical acclaim it rightly deserved, but the general gaming public never seemed to take to it; it sold poorly back in its release season of holiday 2003, despite strong storytelling and play mechanics. The protagonist, Jade, is charged with unveiling the underlying truth behind government and media manipulation during times of crisis, and she does so in a genre-blending action-adventure experience reminiscent of Zelda games. Excellent pacing and endearing characters are icing on the already-sweet cake.
BG&E is definitely worth playing, even seven years later. Especially with BG&E2 hopefully arriving soon, I would really like to see far more people dive into the world of Hyllis.
