Jack Thompson is the lawyer that most of the game community loves to hate because of his attempts to sue game companies and legislate video game laws that ban violent games from being sold. But now, Jack has found himself at the center of an ironic twist of fate–he is being sued by Take Two, the publisher of Grand Theft Auto.
Thompson is being sold because of his efforts to try and depict its upcoming games–Grand Theft Auto IV and Manhunt 2–as public nuisances in Florida. If successful, the games would be in violation of state laws, and thus, be banned, according to a report on GamePolitics.
Take Two claims that Thompson is attempting to violate its First Amendment rights of freedom of speech in trying to ban its games from being sold. In the lawsuit against Thompson, GamePolitics says, "The suit alleges that Thompson’s public nuisance tactic essentially violates Take Two’s First Amendment rights. Lawyers for the game publisher argue that the Florida statute under which Thompson is seeking to have the games declared as nuisances essentially makes the controversial lawyer ‘a private attorney general on behalf of the State of Florida.’"
