Tim Sweeney, of Epic Games, provided some technical details about the upcoming online shooter Unreal Tournament 3. His remarks were given in an interview to German magazine, PC Games Hardware.
According to a translation of a forum post, users who use a SLI configuration will receive a boost in performance while playing UT3, especially at a higher resolution. Epic hasn’t had time to test performance on crossfire systems yet but they expect similar results.
UT3 will ship with full DX10 support and multi-sampling which will provide the highest enhanced performance due to the new graphical interface. In addition, folks running Windows Vista with DX10 will be able to use more video memory and use it efficiently.
Sweeney stated, "Most effects of UT3 are more bound to the fillrate than to basic features like geometry processing. That’s why DX10 has a great impact on performance, while we mostly forgo the integration of new features."
UT3 tested well with Vista x64 bit systems. UT2004 was one of the first games for Windows XP x64 so Epic made sure compatibility would be stable. But they are still waiting till Vista x64 has proper software and driver compatibility for further testing.
Sweeney continued, "Generally speaking, the game runs quite smooth with DX9 hardware released by NVidia and Ati since 2006. On high-end cards, including the DX10 models, UT3 runs incredibly smooth already. Additionally, we also support shader 2.0 graphics hardware, with only a few technical limitations."
Unreal Tournament 3 will ship for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Mac sometime this year.
