The Wii has been received by the general public with open arms for its innovative gameplay and unique control scheme, but it has been linked to health benefits, as well. Last month, a dedicated Wii owner claimed that he lost nine pounds by playing with the Wii for 30 minutes a day. Now, a study conducted by the UK’s Liverpool John Moores University has reported that playing with the Wii could possibly help you to lose up to 27lbs over the course of a year. Provided, of course, that you leave behind the traditional snacks of a bag of chips and soda during your gaming sessions.
According to the research paper, the test subjects (five girls and seven boys between 13 and 15 years of age) were put through the paces of playing with the Wii and a traditional game console. The kids played each machine for 15 minutes a day. After the data was collected, it was discovered that kids who played on the Wii increased their heart rates and calories burned by 156 percent when compared with playing a standard game machine.
Professor Tim Cable, the lead project manager of the study, commented, "Through our testing it is clear that the motion sensor controlled console can make an impact on a child’s heart rate, energy expenditure and the amount of calories burned… Active consoles such as the Wii could provide a means of motivating children who are less active. However, parents should encourage other physical activities and outdoor pursuits in order for their children to lead well balanced lives."
At a price of only $250 US for the Wii game console and Wii Sports, the cost is a fair amount to pay in order to lose unsightly pounds or to keep in shape–and it’s probably much more entertaining than going to the gym.
