Sony’s 3D Display gets release date

Sony 3D Display

Earlier this year at the E3 2011 Sony press conference, the company revealed that a special 3D Display is in the works. Now the new accessory has been given a release date: November 13.

For $499.99, customers will receive the 3D Display, one pair of 3D glasses, MotorStorm Apocalypse, and a HDMI cable. The 3D glasses will also be sold separately for $69.99.

Gamers will want to buy an extra pair to utilize the display’s SimulView technology. This allows two players to each have their own screen while playing local multiplayer as long as they are both wearing the Sony 3D glasses. Games offering this feature at launch are MotorStorm Apocalypse, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, and Super Stardust HD.

There are quite a few PlayStation 3 games that support stereoscopic 3D, including blockbuster titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops and Killzone 3. Of course PS3 owners will still have the option to play games in standard high-definition 2D on the display.

Further information, including a FAQ detailing the technology, can be found at the PlayStation Blog.

My first experience playing a video game blew me away. The fact that Super Metroid was that game certainly helped. So I like to think Samus put me on the path to video games. Well, I guess my parents buying the SNES had a little something to do with it. Ever since then my passion for video games has grown. When I found that I could put words together into a coherent sentence, videogame journalism was a natural interest. Now I spend a large majority of my time either playing video games or writing about them, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
