Sony possibly working on super slim PS3

PS3

Recently discovered documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seem to indicate that Sony is working on another model for the PlayStation 3.

The new “super slim” design would be part of the 4000 series, and the specific name CECH-4001x was mentioned in the documents. The “x” will eventually be replaced by letters corresponding to hard disc specifications.

Reports are indicating that Sony plans to reveal the new PS3 model at this year’s Gamescom in Germany. The timing and location would make sense considering the PS3 slim was officially unveiled at Gamescom back in 2009.

Sony has declined to comment on this recent news, but company executive Shuhei Yoshida was asked about the possibility of a super slim PS3 at E3 last month. His response left the door wide open.

“We haven’t announced anything new on PS3 in terms of hardware revisions,” he explained. “We should never say never – hardware guys are always looking at ways to make things cheaper, smaller.”

Gamers will likely have to wait until Gamescom next month to know whether these reports are true. In the meantime, one of the images from the leaked documents can be viewed below.

My first experience playing a video game blew me away. The fact that Super Metroid was that game certainly helped. So I like to think Samus put me on the path to video games. Well, I guess my parents buying the SNES had a little something to do with it. Ever since then my passion for video games has grown. When I found that I could put words together into a coherent sentence, videogame journalism was a natural interest. Now I spend a large majority of my time either playing video games or writing about them, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
