Casual games can be a very strong component of any console company’s business plan. While the hardcore gamers are what maintains sales, the casual crowd is what brings in the new revenue. Not having a console with casual games can be a financial blow.
The PlayStation 3 currently has the most promising casual game for any console in Little Big Planet, to be released sometime in the future. It makes perfect sense then to assume that the PS3 must have a thriving casual gaming environment.
It turns out this isn’t the case, especially when opinions from the likes of Tal Kerret, the chairman of Oberon Media, who states that the PS3 is not ready for their casual games.
While speaking at a conference for interactive entertainment, Mr. Kerret expressed his opinion on all three of the consoles and how he felt they stacked up.
Not surprisingly, the Xbox 360 was the favorite of Mr. Kerret’s while he expressed his concern for the Wii and PlayStation 3 as a means in marketing his products. Despite this, he still plans on releasing games on all three consoles eventually. He stated:
"Xbox was a great opportunity that they opened up to get content that can be downloaded, that can be controlled in a more open way for the consumers and for the developers," Kerret said.
"So we’ll take some of these games, yes, to the Wii, the PS3…the PS3 is not yet ready for it, but when they are ready."
The PlayStation 3 may not seem like the ideal platform for distributing casual games now, but once Home launches, I don’t doubt the environment for the laid back gaming experience will improve.
