Ever since the PS3 was released, it seems that the game console has always had one phrase attached to it — price reduction. Now that Sony has released its new lower-priced 40 GB PS3, it would seem that it has finally fulfilled the wishes of PlayStation fans all over the world.
However, it’s possible that we may yet see another price drop in the future due to new Blu-ray laser manufacturing processes.
The new laser units are inexpensive to make compared to the previous devices and also smaller as well. What this means to electronics companies making Blu-ray drives is that they’ll be able to produce more compact units–that will most likely end up in 9.5 mm laptop drives.
The drop in prices for the Blue-ray laser will obviously help spread its popularity by making these drives less expensive and smaller. As to whether this translates into another price drop for the PlayStation 3 is up for debate. But the appearance of another low-cost PS3 isn’t out of the question as Sony continues to drive for more market share.
Recent rumors have stated that Sony is planning to release yet another PS3 that will cost only $299. Sony has denied these rumors but seeing how production costs are continually dropping for the machine, the idea of seeing a cheaper PS3 in the future isn’t entirely out of the question.
