If you’ve ever played any of the Civilization games, you can probably identify with the hoards of fellow gamers who have spent countless hours playing these historical strategy based titles.
The man responsible for the series, Sid Meier, will be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Game Developers Conference (GDC) this year.
The award is given to those who have contributed greatly to the art and craft of game development throughout their careers. The award will be presented to Meier in San Francisco by the GDC on February 20 at the Moscone Convention Center.
Jamil Moledina, executive director of the GDC said:
"Sid Meier has served as one of our industry’s greatest role models for more than 25 years, creating fun and intelligent games for a diverse public long before it was popular. Now that the rest of the industry is actively targeting the broader audience, it’s fitting to honor him with our highest award and thank him for his continuing example of inspiration for the video game community."
Sid Meier has had a successful career as not only the developer of such games as Civilization, Alpha Centauri, Railroad Tycoon and Pirates! but is also the co-founder of game publisher MicroProse Software. He later went on to be a founding partner of Firaxis.
Meier is considered the "Father of Computer Gaming" around the world and rightly so as his contributions in producing his highly successful titles have touched many areas in the development of video games.
