Thus far in the world of Second Life, names are chosen in a very controlled manner. Players can create their own first name, but have to choose from a list of pre-defined last names. I tried my luck with this system last month, and found it very difficult to find anything that sounded good to go along with my first name, Rocco. This isn’t because the names on Second Life are horrible, but because everything is taken.
Beginning at the end of the year, Linden Labs will implement a naming system that should solve this sort of problem. Players will be allowed to customize both their first and last names. The catch though, is that it will be exorbitantly expensive, likely costing $100 up front and $50 a year, after that.
All-aboard the money train!
