Sega filed a new application on the patent of their retired game machine, the Dreamcast with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
So what, you say?
Talking heads are getting all excited because the patent/trademark description that was submitted in August differs from the original specs of the Dreamcast in several areas such as peripherals and memory card devices.
This has started speculation about Sega reentering the game console market with Dreamcast II. The idea is tantalizing but unlikely since SEGA almost lost the whole company by trying to make a success of their own brand of game consoles.
However, as far-fetched as this seems, with the phenomenal success of Nintendo’s Wii, who knows, maybe Sega is thinking about producing a low cost casual machine too.
According to the application sent in by Sega, it describes the Dreamcast as:
"Home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs."
No word has come from Sega to deny or confirm the rumors at the time of this writing.
