According to a rumor from IGN, Nintendo of America is thinking of either closing or restructuring their long-running official Nintendo Power magazine. Sources from IGN state Nintendo is planning for mass layoffs and have informed employees to look for other job opportunities come September.
This revelation follows on the heels of a rumor last week of Nintendo moving its marketing and sales divisions from Redmond, Washington to either San Francisco or New York. While the news of a possible move may not be a shocker, just the rumor of the magazine being axed sent waves of horror to fans and Nintendo employees alike.
If the shutdown of Nintendo Power follows through, it would be the third video game magazine to recently get axed. Back in November 2006, Ziff-Davis canned the Official U.S. Playstation Magazine. This past March, TheGlobe.com closed the doors of its publication Computer Games Magazine.
The downturn in gaming magazines has been attributed to the vast amount of information and gaming news that is freely accessible on the internet. The online presentation of gaming info is virtually instantaneous as opposed to the two to three month lag times printed publications experience. So are game magazines dead? Not yet, but they seem to be on life support at the moment.
