The entire PlayStation world seems to be in a state of shock and confusion. Why?
First there was the announcement of the PS3 60GB model being lowered in price by $100.
Fans rejoiced and started to celebrate. But before the celebration could take full hold of everyone, Kaz Hirai, President of Sony Entertainment, confirmed that the 60GB PS3 would actually be discontinued in the US as soon as supplies dried up.
Can we take much more? The latest rumor coming down the pike is from the magazine GameInformer. In the latest issue, it states that a new PS3 40GB model is coming our way next year but will not have backwards compatibility. What would be the price of such a model? Try on $399 on for size.
MicroTechXP.com reported that Dave Karraker, Sony’s lead PR guy, was asked if this was true or not. He replied cryptically:
"We won’t be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated."
After the recent public relations debacle regarding the PS3 pricing, it would be a wonder if anyone would still be interested in the dumbed down version…even if it does cost only $399.
