Thanks to the comments from Microsoft’s Don Mattrick, who claimed the multiplayer experience for GTA IV would be unique to the Xbox 360, Rockstar has come forth to set the record straight. As stated directly from RockStar, both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will contain multiplayer portions for GTA IV. Those worried that the PlayStation 3 version of GTA IV will lack multiplayer support can breathe a sigh of relief.
What has not been addressed is what exactly those multiplayer components will be, and if they will differ from system to system. This could explain why Microsoft said their version of the multiplayer is special, but I can’t imagine it being that much better than the PlayStation 3. RockStar started their GTA reign on Sony’s machine, after all. They won’t provide anything less than a perfect experience for their loyal fan base.
Still, it will be interesting to see what the multiplayer component will be ultimately, and if it adds to the GTA IV experience or is more of a distraction. With the GTA series being such a single player focused experience, let’s hope that RockStar is pulling out all the stops for the multiplayer and not tacking it on as just another one of the jack-of-all-trades portion of the game like previous iterations of the GTA franchise have ultimately suffered from.
