Frank N. Magid Associates, an industry research group, speculates that the PS3 will retain its lead in console market share when the dust settles sometime around 2009. The remarks and predictions were made before an audience attending the London Games Summit.
Mike Vorhaus, representing Magid Associates, related the findings from his company and said that although it would be an extremely tight race, Sony would be declared the winner, with the Xbox 360 and Wii following closely behind. Vorhaus said that while Microsoft is finally a viable force in game console sales, he noted that the Big M had other reasons driving them for market share. Vorhaus said, "Xbox has nothing to do with driving profit at Microsoft.”
According to Vorhaus, Nintendo,s Wii should “hold up quite well,, but saw a problem with the new machine because of a non-existent track record. "[The problem is] in the tendency to be referred to as a quite young brand.”
The report from Frank N. Magid Associates seems to indicate that the breakdown for consumers favors the PS3. According to a breakdown of 1800 respondents, 7% indicated that they were planning on purchasing a PS3, with 5% in favor of the Xbox 360, and 4% for Nintendo,s Wii. However, the survey was conducted in Spring of 2006, and precluded the release of important information concerning the Wii and 360.
