In a recent poll, Australia’s Federal Home Affairs group determined that 98.2 percent of voters would support an R18+ rating for games in their country. The total percentage was calculated from the votes of 59,678 participants.
The poll was conducted through an in-store promotion at select Australian EB Games locations in the region. A group known as Grow Up Australia acquired 16,056 submissions in addition to the in-store votes. Several special interest groups, such as the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association, were also permitted to submit their expectantly more balanced results, reporting a 53 percent support rating for the new adult classification.
It only makes sense that gamers and EB employees would support a new rating for games that were previously refused classification in their country. With any luck, studies such as these will help open the eyes of law makers in Australia and provide more leeway for mature games throughout the continent.
