PS3 sales in Q1 2008 twice that of 2007

PS3Sony is steadily marching back into the thick of the console fight, and they’ve got the numbers to prove it. The company has announced that worldwide sales of the PlayStation 3 for the first quarter of 2008 reached a total of 1.56 million units, more than doubling the number sold during the same period last year.

The PSP, too, is selling more this year than last, shifting 3.72 million units worldwide, up from 2.13 million in 2007.

More numbers tell us that software sales are also on the rise, with the PS3 selling 22.8 million games and the PSP moving 11.8 million. Those are 18.1 million and 2 million unit increases, respectively.

The PlayStation 2 is the only piece of Sony gaming hardware to see a decrease, down to only 1.51 million units for the quarter.

Sony expects to sell 10 million PS3s and 15 million PSPs by the end of fiscal 2008, which ends next March.
