PGR fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the next installment of their favorite racer. But some interesting news has come out of the official Bizarre Creations forums. A forum member was asking the dev team if Project Gotham Racing 4 would continue the night/day changes for each track as it was in PGR3.
"Ben," a Bizarre Creations staff member stated that these time changes would no longer be available for each of the cities due to immense amount of space needed to double program for each day and night scenario. In short, the game DVD doesn’t have enough room to put all the code that would be needed to pull this off.
Did I just hear someone out there yell, "Blu-ray!" (Wiseguy)
According to the site, Ben stated that:
"You won’t see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn’t a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD.
"So we’ve worked around the problem by providing different lighting models per city. For example, Macau is always in the daytime, but if you play it during a storm everything looks darker and more foreboding. If you play during a blizzard then things are slightly tinged blue and everything seems more frozen. Of course, playing this track in sunshine will make everything appear bright and yellowy."
So the good news is that there will still be a few cities that show nighttime driving. The not so good news — not all of them.
