Parkour-based FPS in the works

parkourNow this sounds cool. Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment (DICE) is working on a first-person shooter that is based on the French urban acrobatic activity, parkour.

Mirror’s Edge will be released on the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, and will hope to do "what Prince of Persia has done, but in first-person", according to producer Owen O’Brien. Running, jumping, climbing…and leaping…the game’s female protagonist, Faith, will fight against the corrupt, authoritarian governing body that is ruling – and ruining – her world.

The game aims to give the player a better in-the-body feeling, using the physics of mass, acceleration, head motion, etc. A "reaction time" slow-motion mechanic is being implemented, along with a system of timed button presses to execute Faith’s moves.

The shooting portion of the game will be minimal according to DICE, with the focus lying primarily on the game’s acrobatics. Guns will be used more like "tools" to help complete goals, rather than blasting everything in sight.

The game will feature very large levels to explore, and DICE is working on a multiplayer mode, as well.

There is currently no release date for Mirror’s Edge.
