SCi, the parent company of Eidos, has disclosed that the Tomb Raider series will not be heading to the PS3 until the year 2008. The intentions of the company were revealed at the end of the yearly financial statement released by the company. According to the report, SCi seems to be taking a “wait and see” approach before committing to Sony,s next gen console by stating, "We have not planned any releases on the Sony PlayStation 3 platform in the 2007 financial year. This is consistent with our policy to launch titles on a new platform when the platform reaches a commercially viable installed base."
SCi then went on to state that although the European launch date of the PS3 will be delayed, it would not be a hardship upon the company. "…We are not adversely affected by Sony’s recent announcement that the European release of the PS3 has been delayed until early 2007. Our PS3 products in development are planned for release from the 2008 financial year onwards. Our 2008 products will include new versions of Tomb Raider (including a PS3 version) and many of our other key franchises.”
The first Tomb Raider game was released in 1996 and was acclaimed as a new breakthrough in the adventure action game genre. The title was known for its creative puzzles, captivating environments and great gameplay. Many fans of the game franchise expressed the opinion that there was a clear decline in the quality of the titles after the third installation. However, with the successful reception of Tomb Raider: Legends this year, the series has seen a new boost of interest in the old franchise to the delight of Lara Croft fans.
