Nintendo has reported that their handheld DS console has recorded over 5 million units of sales in Japan so far since the system has been released. Not only that, but the DS has beaten all other gaming hardware in Japan in sales per unit in the year 2005. This hardware includes other popular systems in Japan such as the Sony Playstation 2, Sony PSP, and Nintendo™s own GameBoy Advance. Satoru Iwata (President of Nintendo) stated that the Nintendo DS was the fastest system to reach 5 million units sold ever. In case you just emerged from your powerless, lightless cave, note that the DS is outselling the PSP in the United States by a good margin as well. Getting off of the topic of hardware, Iwata also mentioned that sales for DS software is doing quite well. In fact, four of their current games just reached the 1 million copies shipped mark. The holiday season sure did pay off for Nintendo. Nintendo sold thousands of copies of the DS bundle pack during the holiday season in the U.S., likely due to the timely release of Mario Kart DS, which was included in a special bundle.
