People refer to Guitar Hero as the preeminent title for rhythm music games, but before there was GH there was PaRappa the Rapper. The game had amazing 2D graphics and gameplay that was entertaining and novel for its time. PaRappa was released on the original PlayStation in 1997 and Sony has decided that the puppy faced rapper will make his reappearance on the PSP for PaRappa's 10th anniversary. Get ready for another visit to Chop Chop Master Onion's cool rap tunes and lyrics.
The game is scheduled for a July launch and will offer all of the original gameplay found in the original PlayStation game. However, Sony says that some added enhancements and features will be available for the PSP edition to spuce things up a bit. It will also be offering remixes of the original game songs for downloa...
In April, the PSP core system price dropped from $199 to $169. In the UK, the PSP will also get a price cut that will lower the cost of the unit from 149.99 GBP ($300 USD) to 129.99 GBP ($260 USD). The new pricing will go into effect during the first week of May with similar price reductions occurring throughout Europe at a price of 169 euros. ($229 USD)
According to NPD sales tracking data, Nintendo's DS handheld game console sold 508,000 units to the PSP's 180,000 last month. Some industry watchers attribute the price drop of the PSP to lagging sales and an attempt by Sony to boost business traffic.
A Sony exec said the real reason was due to make the PSP available to a wider audience. "PSP is unique and is constantly evolving. It offers the widest palette of mobile entertainment, from gam...
There are lots of new games that come out from the game companies, but one in particular seemed to hold our attention -- a new game for the PSP named, Pocket Pool. Ok, we did a double take on the title of the game, but we were even more amused when the official PlayStation site described the game thusly:
"Grab your stick and go head-to-head with the Dream Models in Pocket Pool for the PSP ...And when you're up against the Dream Models, wins mean more than just a notch on your cue - they unlock video clips and image galleries of the luscious Dream Models."
Well, so much for being subtle. Does Jack Thompson know about this game?
Final Fantasy fans are all familiar with the long hours that are typically needed to complete any of the popular RPG titles. But with the recent announcement by Square Enix, you'll be able to take Final Fantasy with you wherever you go -- the first two original episodes will be coming to the PSP on June 26 in North America.
Square Enix says FF I and II will be anniversary editions and will include new character art, dungeons, camera angles, graphics and a 16:9 widescreen format. No word was mentioned of changing the gameplay and the often criticized high frequency of random battles found in the original games. But apart from these problems, the redone FF titles will be sure to drain the battery life of PSPs as RPG fans experience the beginning episodes of the 20 year-old franchise.

Wired examined some quotes from a few Sony employees behind the reasoning of lowering the cost of the PSP and the planned marketing campaign to promote the handheld console to the 13-17 year old demographic. The planned campaign, titled "Dude, Get Your Own," will succeed last Christmas' failed "All I Want For Christmas is a PSP" marketing campaign. John Koller, Senior Product Manager for the PSP, said that most of the PSP consumer base ranges between 13-17 years old. "The intend-to-purchase crowd is living mostly in that group as well. We're looking to expand beyond where we've been. PSP started as a device to appeal to 18-34 year-olds, but north of 26-27."
Koller expanded on the reasoning behind the price cut for the PSP. The first reason was that Sony is able to save more money on product...
Today marks the long-awaited price drop of Sony's PSP, and the Japan-based consumer electronics giant appears to be offering up some extra incentive to buy one. Not only has the PSP dropped from $199.99 down to $169.99, but two of the best games on the system are receiving similar treatment.
Daxter and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror are both heading to the PSP Greatest Hits lineup, beginning today. What this means to gamers is that now they can get some high quality PSP content for $20 a pop. They're just a couple more good reasons to buy yourself a PSP. Good moves, Sony.
Now, about the PS3...
As of tomorrow, the Sony PSP core system will be marked down from $199.99 to $169.99. GameStop/EB Games already has all of the signage necessary, and is set to go for the April 3 price drop.
Too bad for Sony that the Nintendo DS already costs $129.99. It seems like the handheld market is an uphill battle for anyone who dares take on Nintendo. All console war discussion aside, if you've been waiting for this kind wallet treatment (and who hasn't), it may just be about time you picked up Sony's little portable delight.
Sony has updated the PSP's firmware to version 3.30, with a list of features that probably won't make PSP owners jump out of their seats to update their handheld. Chiefly among the features is an expansion of support for PlayStation Network titles and support for video resolution of up to 720x480.
The full list of features includes:

An announcement has come down the wire that Square Enix plans to hold a press event--or a party, if the name of the event is to be taken with no grains of salt--this year on May 12 and 13.
The Square Enix Party 2007 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Final Fantasy franchise, and while nothing official has emerged thus far, it's entirely plausible that we'll see a progress report--or, more likely, trailers--for the multitude of FF games currently in development. "The List," as it stands right now, includes Final Fantasy XIII (PS3), Final Fantasy XIII: Versus (PS3), Final Fantasy XIII: Agito (Mobile), Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (PSP), Final Fantasy Tactics (PSP), Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates (DS), Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (Wii), and the l...
There was a lot of excitement over a "leak" from Sony UK Managing Director Ray Maguire, who mentioned that the PSP may be going small. During Sony's PSP in Education meeting, he said that the PSP was the "first iteration" of the unit and as it was with other Sony game machines, a "smaller, lighter" version would be coming.
When GameIndustry.biz heard about the potential of a remodeled PSP, Maguire was tracked down and asked what he meant. Maguire responded that the screen size of the PSP would not change, although cosmetic changes or other hardware differences might be made.
But before anyone could say "spin control," the chief spin doctor at Sony, David Karraker, immediately dismissed Maguire's comments and told Gamasutra that Maguire meant something else by his comments. Karraker remarked,...
Sony's new downloadable movie service, set for launch early next year, will provide digital downloads of films for playback on the PSP. Sony is in negotiations with several companies regarding service subscription, including Amazon.com and movie downloading sites MovieLink and CinemaNow.
According to a Financial Times report, movies will be downloaded first to a computer and then can be moved onto a memory stick. While it may sound like a hassle to move from computer to memory stick, it could ultimately make things easier for users, if all of their downloaded movies were to be stored locally for a quick and easy move to the PSP. Such a simple process seems unlikely, however, when piracy is taken into account--the major reason why many movie studios have hesitated to make their films availab...
Back in August, SEGA announced that they had hired handheld developer Planet Moon Studios to bring back one of their old franchises for the PSP (story). Today, that franchise was revealed: it's SEGA's classic air combat action title After Burner. Planet Moon will be developing a new game in the franchise titled After Burner: Black Falcon. Each plane will be customizable, and the game will support multiplayer challenges, in both 2- and 8-player co-op modes. After Burner: Black Falcon is set for release in Spring 2007.

Fans will now have to wait an extra two weeks before they can pick up their copy of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. The upcoming PSP game, which was originally expected to be released in October, has been pushed back to early November due to "unforseen circumstances."
A representative speaking on behalf of Rockstar did confirm that the revised release date has been changed to November 3, but declined to comment further. In the mean time, gamers can always play Miami Vice.
Football fans know how frustrating it is to see a referee spot the ball incorrectly during a game. In some cases, the fate of the outcome rests upon a mere few inches. But this real life scenario has afflicted the virtual world in EA,s NCAA Football ,07 for the PSP. The bug occurs when the ball is brought back to the initial point of contact. The problem is that the offensive player has not even been touched by the opposing defense.
Electronic Arts has issued a free replacement to those who have experienced this bug in their copy of the game. EA will also offer free shipping and a $15 discount on your next purchase at EA.com to make amends for the inconvenience. EA,s official website explained the procedure for returning defective UMD game disks:
"...we have been working on a solution regar...
Within days of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announcing that it will release a new PS2 slimline in the color pink, comes word that they will also debut a pink PSP in the forth quarter of 2006. The newly refaced PSP will come with white headphones, a 32MB memory stick duo, a white pouch with wrist strap and an UMD from singer Pink (who else?).
As to why Sony Europe is on a pink rampage with its slimline PS2 and PSP, Stephanie Hareau, senior brand manager for Sony Europe said, "The Pink PSP launch is much more than just launching a new color. It is about a confident and powerful attitude for young women. The association with Pink, a worldwide icon and musical chameleon, will enable PSP to push new boundaries."
In as far as new boundaries are concerned, it is hoped that new PSP game softwa...

SEGA announced today that they've hired handheld developer Planet Moon Studios to bring one of its old franchises back to life. This new game will be for the PSP, but it is currently unknown with which franchise they'll be working. After developing a few acclaimed PC and console games (MDK, Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Armed and Dangerous) Planet Moon moved on to develop solely for handhelds, namely Infected for the PSP.
SEGA is already working its voodoo to get some other franchises to rise from the dead. Sega Genesis Collection is heading to the PS2 and the PSP later this year, Totally Games is working with SEGA to bring another old brand back to life, and Secret Level will be bringing the next Golden Axe game to the Xbox 360 and the PS3.
Rumors flew last week with news surfacing of another major price reduction for Sony,s PSP handheld console. The PSP, which originally was released at a MSRP of $250, had been reduced to $199. A recent news story on CNNMoney indicated that the PSP was going for another dip in price (to $149 USD) sometime during the Nov-Dec holiday season.
Today, a representative from Sony UK dismissed the reports by saying to Game Industry that, "Currently we have no plans to cut the price of the PSP at this time." Although Sony dismisses the price drop story, it is standard industry policy to deflate rumors by using the phrase "there are no plans at this time," in order to avoid issuing a flat denial.
Whether there is a planned price reduction for the PSP is up for speculation. However, with the success Nint...
