Square Enix’s long-awaited addition to its Final Fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy XII, has finally been released in Japan. As was expected, the FF faithful were forming lines before stores were even open. To kick off the launch, Akitoshi Kawatsu, the director of Final Fantasy XII and Square Enix president, Yoichi Wada, made an appearance at a retail shopping center where the title was being released. Among this collection of heavy-weight personalities at the launch was Taro Kakase, the music composer of the game, via video link, and the game’s main title singer, Angela Aki. Kawatsu said, "When we originally announced FF XII's development back in 2000, we said it was going to be an online game…[but] it changed into an offline title during its development, and now it's fin...
When news was released last year about Rockstar’s intention to release a new Grand Theft Auto game for the PlayStation, PS2 owners were overjoyed. But the “bad” news was that the new title would be released for Sony’s PSP, and not for the PS2. Some PS2 owners, who didn’t have a PSP, started to seriously consider the purchase of the handheld, just to play Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. No doubt, there were extra sales of PSPs because of this. But those who waited and hoped for a PS2 version will be happy to hear that Rockstar has ported the game over to the full fledged game console. Rockstar CEO Paul Eibeler announced that the PS2 version of Liberty City Stories will cost less than its little handheld cousin. He said, “…we're looking at l...
The Advertising Standards Authority of the UK is in action again. Last month, it was reported here on GamerNode that the ASA shot down the television ads shown for the Call of Duty games. The complaints charged that the ads falsely advertised the games by using misleading graphics, which were not in the games themselves. After investigation, the charges proved to be true and the ads were pulled. This week, ads for Konami’s UK released game, Crime Life: Gang Wars, was given the boot by the ASA. The complaints are about ads which appeared in the Metro, London edition. The ads depict five black men standing and holding guns, a baseball bat and a hammer. The caption for the image says, “Rule the streets or fall by the wayside.” According the the ASA, “The complainant ob...
Sometimes, procrastination pays off in its own strange way. Take for instance, the smash hit for the PS2, God of War. This game has won numerous awards and acclaim for its superb graphics, great action and terrific story. What has this have to do with procrastination? Not for the game, but for the gamer. Those of us who waited, or never got around to buying this fantastic game will be rewarded. God of War will be entering Sony’s Greatest Hits List. For the frugal Sony fan, this can only mean one thing—the game is selling at a cheaper price! Titles which enter this high stratosphere of elitism are immediately discounted in price to make the titles more accessible in price point. In the past, games that attained Greatest Hits status had to sell at least 1 million copies. Later th...
There was some excitement in the air recently as reports and rumors were broadcast about Sony’s intention on releasing the sequel to their monster hit God of War for the PS2. Websites were repeating this story across the internet as gamers were enthralled at the prospects of entering the mythological world of Kratos once more. But the reported news leak, supposedly taken from documents obtained via Sony’s own marketing department, and posted by a European game website, were immediately taken down after Sony threatened legal action against the site. Apparently, the information was either very sensitive in nature and was not yet meant for public distribution, or the information was incorrect. Regardless, the website in question later replaced the news story by saying, “The ...
Electronic Arts, mega game publisher and game franchise addict, has announced that it is considering its recently released game, The Godfather, as a candidate for more game installments. (Oh no, everyone said.) David DeMartini, the executive producer of the game, said to BBC News, "We went into this venture taking into consideration the establishment of a brand new franchise. Our intention is to make two and three." The Godfather game has EA heavily invested in the project, and a one title publication will probably not produce enough revenue to offset the costs of production. EA™s foray into the mobster game category is fueled by the success of the Grand Theft Auto series. DeMartini explained: We wanted to make a category leader that would give significant competition to the GTA game and b...

Artificial Intelligence") as the main character Sora and is joined by David Gallagher ("7th Heaven") as Riku, and Hayden Panettiere ("Racing Stripes," "Raising Helen") as Kairi. Kingdom Hearts II will also feature the voice talents of Jesse McCartney ("Summerland," Recording artist, "Beautiful Soul" CD) as the mysterious boy Roxas, Brittany Snow ("The Pacifier," "American Dreams") as Namine, Christopher Lee ("Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Rin...
Lego Star Wars was a big success with many gamers worldwide. Now developer Traveller™s Tales want to find a new hope as they work with new publisher LucasArts, who have stepped in for Eidos for a sequel. This next installment of Lego space action will be focused on Episodes IV, V, and VI. A two-page Episode IV poster with the Lego characters has been seen and given to a select few Star Wars fans. However, LucasArts will not confirm or deny the title's existance. LucasArts at first declined to publish the first game, but after the title's success, they opted to take over publishing from Eidos. Look for an official announcement of the title in the next few weeks.
Mortal Kombat fans will be able to hear the words "Finish Him!" uttered once more as Mortal Kombat Armageddon will make its way on to current generation consoles. Armageddon will reportedly feature an overwhelming 60 characters, that's every character from each of the Mortal Kombat games, with the the chance of Montaro being excluded (he's a horse for crying out loud). Features in the game include mid-air combos, direction controlled throws, a redone fatality system, a character creation tool as well as a Konquest mode based on the engine of the Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks game. The bloodthirsty fans will be able to finish enemies to their heart's delight this October on the Playstation 2 and Xbox. Jack Thompson must be excited.
Square-Enix remains hush-hush about their forthcoming Final Fantasy VII-themed action game. This PS2-exclusive title is scheduled for a January 26th release in Japan, with a proposed Quarter 2 US date, information has been sparse, but adequate to tease excitement out of FFVII fans. What HAS been said is that gun-toting, brooding Vincent Valentine is the hero of the game. The basic story is set three years after the conclusion of FFVII. A group called the Deep Ground Soldiers (a division of SOLDIER) searches for Vincent, for so far undeclared reasons. The World Restoration Organization seeks to prevent the cataclysms in FFVII from ever happening again and repair the damage done by Meteor. Many flashbacks are hinted at, with Vincent™s veiled past coming to light over the course of the ...

How could those other losers miss this one? Al...
It's creative and original content that makes games truly interesting and enjoyable. However, these two qualities have been somewhat lacking in recent titles. Fortunately Tim Schafer, the mastermind behind such titles as Grim Fandango and Full Throttle, is back with a completely new action adventure game. With such titles under his belt, it should come as no surprise that his latest endeavor sets out to be not only original and wacky but damn fun as well. Psychonauts, as it's so called, may just be the one unique title that PC gamers have been longing for. Psychonauts is a basic platformer action title which is something we don't see too often on PCs. It can be compared most closely to titles such as Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank on the PS2. However, Psychonauts has a few cards up i...
Juiced has had quite a wild development cycle lately. Development was first started back in 2003 and we still haven't seen a near-final product yet. This could be due to the fact that the developer, Juice Games, has had some difficulty finding the right funding for the project. Not to mention that their previous publisher, Acclaim, went bankrupt forcing this title to go without a real publisher. It wasn't long after that THQ bought the rights to Juiced in order to keep this project going. Now, you don't invest in a title like this unless you see some potential in it, and apparently THQ has noticed something unique about this title. Well, we can gladly tell you that Juiced does have a lot of potential to compete with the bigger racing games, but it may not have the upper edge it needs to kn...
Since their creation in 2000, Finnish developer Bugbear has been focused solely on creating driving games with 2002's Rally Trophy being one of their latest. Their upcoming title FlatOut seems like a simple derby racing game, but don't let the concept fool you. There's really some ideas here that not only make FlatOut interesting but unique as well. In particular, it's the excellent damage and physics system that we're interested in. So far as we can see FlatOut contains some of the most realistic collision detection we've ever seen in a racing game. It's one of the main elements that really makes this title so appealing. FlatOut's damage system contains around 40 different parts that can be deformed on the car. Each part is accurately detailed and reacts realistically according to the env...
Those lucky Japanese! The PlayStation 2 Final Fantasy XII Pack will be up for grabs on March 16th 2006. The game goes on sale the same day. The pack has no MSRP, meaning that if the Americans' reaction to the Xbox 360 launch was any indication, then prices for this combo can reach into the realm of body parts or small children. The pack includes the black slimline PS2 (SCPH-75000 FF) with an imprint of a picture/logo from the game on the console, as well as a vertical stand, Dual Shock controller, a Final Fantasy XII mobile phone strap, styrofoam packaging, and a copy of FF XII. The PS2 model included in the bundle (SCPH-75000 FF) uses the latest PS2 hardware, the same hardware which is reportedly buggy with some game software. No word given on the bundle coming to the States, and it would...
It's beginning to look like the Nintendo DS isn't the only hot item on the Japan market right now. That's because of the new hit release of Kingdom Hearts 2 brought to you by Square Enix. Square Enix shipped 1 million copies of their new game in Japan, beating the original Kingdom Hearts, which never reached 1 million copies shipped in Japan. KH2 was released in Japan on December 22, 2005 and reached the 1 million games shipped mark 3 days later. It is expected to be released on March 1, 2006 here in the United States. If you would like to compare this mark to something, think about the Final Fantasy series: in Japan, these titles usually reach the 2 million shipped mark in the first day. So although this isn't all that impressive, Kingdom Hearts 2 is expected to gain much more popularity ...

Vivendi Universal has just announced its acquisition of the California-based game developer High Moon Studios, formerly known as Sammy Studios. The studio is still very much a fledgling developer, as it was only created back in March of last year, and only has one major release under its belt. As part of the deal, all 100 employees who previously worked at High Moon will remain on the payroll for VU. At the official announcement of the acquisition Vivendi CEO Bruce Hack talked about becoming a major player in the next generation and added that "VU Games and High Moon are already collaborating on a soon-to-be-annou...
