World of Goo has 90% piracy rate

While we're on the subject of piracy (and using PotC-inspired images), a sad fact has come out today: 90% of the people playing the wonderful World of Goo have pirated it.

It's easy to laugh at piracy when people pirate games using DRM or published by companies like EA, but when the game being pirated is the creation of an indie 2-man studio running out of the developers' own pockets... Well, let's just say it's very sad news. 

According to 2D Boy founder Ron Carmel, it's been a little disconcerning to see the number of people pirating the game, but the company is not entirely crushed by it. "We're doing ok, though," he said. "We're getting good sales through WiiWare, Steam, and our website. Not going bankrupt just yet!" A few people have emailed or commented on the 2D Boy site that they initially downloaded the game and then later purchased it, but 2D Boy says that that is a rare occurence indeed. And while the profits from the 10% legit copies of World of Goo may be keeping the studio afloat, imagine what they could accomplish with the money the pirated copies would have given.

How will indie game developers combat the onslaught of piracy? I suppose all they can do is hope people have a change of heart and decide to support the small studio games they enjoy. In the meantime, I'm off to gift a copy of World of Goo to a friend for an early birthday present.

Pardon my french, but you're opinion is invalid hazzmat. And Jast3r Rogu3 is a douche too. This sites reviews even said World of Goo was one of the best games this year, so it's not just a crappy 2D game you're used to from your sick demented childhoods. 50 dollars, now think about it; if even 10% MORE had bought this game then the indie team would have been able to possible expand and work on an even BETTER game. Anyone who pirates this game should be shot in the genitalia then immediately followed by being shot in the head.

yeah It is a GREAT game but 20 bucks?! Few people can justify twenty bucks for this game unless you're an alpha gamer or really love these types of games.

Hazzmat, it's not a 50 dollar game. I agree, if we were talking an indie studio that made a half-arsed, short game and then charged 50 bucks, I would feel some sympathy for people outraged over the way they approach consumers.

I don't like the way pirates often feel justified in their acts, though. But even if you somehow want to excuse your own stealing (I don't see why - if you want to steal then steal, but please don't bother me about it), none of the regular excuses count for this game. They haven't tried to screw consumers over with invasive DRM or install limits, this isn't a big company trying to make a cheap buck, it's two guys who worked hard and from the product very obviously poured their heart out into the game - which I still stand by calling one of the best games of this year.

20 bucks too much? Uh...then don't buy it. If you're pirating it, you obviously want to play it, so it must be worth something.

I paid a lot more for Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 than for World of Goo, but guess which game I enjoyed most?

Is anyone surprised by that statistic (even if it's verified, which I have a hard time understanding how it could be done)? The game was released with absolutely no protection. It was not released on Steam first and unrestricted download later. No effort at all to prevent casual piracy. (We all know professional-level piracy is unstoppable.) Fortunately for 2D Boy, the Wii release needs to be bought, and the press is overwhelmingly positive.

The statistic was taken from looking at IPs of top scores submitted, and the variance of IPs is 10 times bigger than number of games sold. Obviously that is a highly inaccurate way to measure it, and chances are piracy is way below 90%, but it's still present. See RPS article here.

Maybe the whole thing just boils down to one thing...greed for some pirates. "Why pay when I can get it for free?" is the usual answer by the hardcore pirates.

$20? Is it really that much? I just spent $20 on another copy of N ($15 with a coupon, to be more precise, and on a copy of N+, to be exact, and on my DS, to take my frustration/addiction for a walk), so think about how much more worth it something new that I can't get for free already is to me, or to all of us, really. This isn't a case of justifiable piracy (pirates have reasons other than "it's better when it's free"), this is just a case of gimme gimme douche-baggery.

Turok for pc, 6 dollars. C.O.H. 4 dollars, ARMA, 6 dollars, Trackmania United, 11 dollars. And, when L4D comes out, i will buy it because the dev's need to make money. For instance, Let's say you work in a kitchen. You spend lots of time and effort making food, but someone takes it, without paying, and eats it. Your out of the product, and they say "It was free, and I am satisfied." There goes your effort and money. So, when all is said, Jaster, you are a dumbass.

I will admit that I have pirated games, and that I could have bought them, but the only 2 big games I have pirated are oblivion (which i had for 360, but lost it, so it's not that bad) and fallout 3. Apart from these the only games I pirate are old games that I can't get otherwise. I do think that in this case, it is wrong to pirate this game, but I also feel that some degree of piracy IS NOT going to kill the industry.
Oh, and I only get 10euros a week anyway, so I don't exactly have a maissive budget.

Daggerfall, you will find it, but I'll be f****d if you'll get that to work on xp (properly, no crash, no fucked up colour, all quest items visible, etc) and also, buying it online takes so loooong to deliver,dl is 20 mins, and I live in Ireland, so postage is expensive, AND the devs make no profit out of it if I buy it second-hand anyway.

That's theft. This is piracy:

You spend lots of time and effort making food, but someone uses alien technology to make a perfect copy of that food, and eats the copy. Now they're not hungry and don't have to pay you to eat your creation. But you still have it.

I'm not saying it's right. I'm saying it's *different* from outright theft. As long as people equate the 2 concepts, I keep my distance from the conclusions they draw.

I'm not really sure how it is any different. A copy couldn't exist without the original, so you're still cheating someone of of their rightfully earned money. (Cobra, this isn't directed at you btw)

If you're going to play it, you need to pay for it. It's no different than buying a car. You're not going to get to use it without paying for it. Pirates steal, so therefore a pirate is a person who commits theft.

I think it can be thought of as theft if you use this approach:

You work in a kitchen. You spend lots of time and effort, and pay money for the ingredients, to make food. The customer pays you for this food, eats the food, takes the money back, and leaves.

Piracy of any medium is simply a display of disrespect for the developers, the medium's community, and the economy. The next time you complain about having little to no money for games, take a minute and ask yourselves why this is. Could it be because theft is a fairly big problem to developers trying to make enough money? Less entertainment means less need for disposable income, which in turn means lower salaries for the country in question, and again in turn means less money for you, the consumer.

Don't claim to support video games, the industry, and especially indie game developers if you're going to pirate their titles. It's disgusting. It's one thing to grab an emulator to play a Famicom game you owned as a child. It's another to rip off Bethesda, 2D Boy and the Spore creative team. If you're willing to while away hours waiting for these illegal downloads, why not simply use those hours to work? It's not impossible.

I think it just hurts to see the irony of people defending their software piracy offenses as justified simply because of their money problems. Our economy, both in the UK and the USA, isn't in the best of shape, but realistically, the majority of the video game demographic aren't even financially affected. The World of Goo demo lasted me around four hours of piddling about. I didn't pirate it, I didn't buy it either because I couldn't afford it. But unless the cure for cancer is contained within the download, I never will.

You should be ashamed of yourself, Jast3r Rogu3. Grow up, get a job and start respecting other people's hard work. You wouldn't like it if I came over to your house and stole all the legitimate games you own, if any. But hell, why should I care, right? You love breaking the law, you little basement rebel you.
