We're not totally certain if this is a good idea or not, but considering that Google is worth about $157 BILLION, we suppose entering the browser market won't affect them too much if their new Chrome doesn't make it.
Starting this week, Google is releasing its beta version of Chrome in over 100 countries. According to techmeme, the browser will feature:
* Open source code.
* Include a JavaScript Virtual Machine built from scratch
* Tabs will be movable.
* Have auto completion in the address bar.
* Privacy features
* Will fend off phishing and malware attacks.
Well, so far, nothing really earthshaking about Chrome. But why did Google launch a new browser that will be hard pressed to find its niche in a world full of Internet Explorer and Firefox?
Google said, "On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn't the browser that matters. It's only a tool to run the important stuff - the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go."
So will Chrome take the shine off of Explorer and Firefox? It's hard to say at this early stage, but the graph below shows the most popular browsers at the moment. Is there room for Chrome? We'll have to wait and see.

I think this is really for people to get off of IE... which is a good thing, because IE sucks donkey nuts.
I use Firefox, so I will not be making the switch.
Its quite good, but there is no rss bar, i cant write a pages name in the adress bar to get to i site ive been before, and firefox is much faster so i am sticking to firefox now i think...
What do you mean you can't type a a page name to find an an address you've been to before? Seems to work for me.
I'm gonna use it over the next few days and possibly weeks. Lookin' pretty good so far, although there are a few things I prefer about IE7.
The thing is bloody FAST! Srsly!
Well if i write Red Alert the red alert forum is nowhere near the top, sure it starts damn fast and manages tabs very well, but the lack of rss bar and the fact that atleast for me fifefox loads every page and all of its content a lot faster, though i really think Chrome will be big in the future, just not finished yet and well, its not it s just a beta, right?
I've been testing it out since yesterday... It seems ok, but I miss a lot of the features I took for granted with firefox. I also don't like that I can't customize the navigation toolbar at all, so for now I'm gritting my teeth and bearing with it until I make a final decision.
So far, it seems to work pretty well. Each tab acts as an independent "program" and if one of my windows crashes for whatever reason, this doesn't effect and shut down the other website locations. It's lightning fast in loading graphics and webpages.
What I don't like is having to choose "incognito" mode each time you fire up Chrome in order for it not to keep tracking your history. Also, the dang "recent bookmarks" box can't be turned off, as far as I know.
I had problems with java script pages, like the new Facebook. And I'm not a big fan of blue, but otherwise, a very nice, light weight browser.
firefox 3 crashes about 30 times a day for me.
chrome is stupidly fast compared to firefox, at least on this machine- i was installing something, and decided to compare the two. chrome started almost instantly and took 20k of ram, whereas firefox took over a minute and 37k. I think I have a new favourite.
I have to try it out then. FF is a big burden on my aging machine.
