Daily Q: What was the first PC game you played?

Category: Features, Posted: 07/11/2008 at 11:53PM CDT by Billy Wang, Previews Editor

dailyqFor me (I'm still a young fellar), it would have to be Oregon Trail on the old Apple II computers in second and third grade of elementary school during the early 1990's. Later when two games called Doom and Doom II were released in 1993/1994, my PC gaming life took off from there.

I have other early memories with various FPS from Apogee Sotware during the mid-90's, now known as 3D Realms; I remember juggling the various floppy disks for installation of Blake Stone: Aliens, also don't forget Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem and even Rise of the Triad.

To relive the classic game that is Oregon Trail, head over to VirtualApple. It requires Windows and, if you're using it, a Firefox plug-in/extension.

So what was your very first PC game and when did you play it?

Posted by Requiem on 07/11/2008 at 11:54PM

Not counting those edutainment games i used to play in school, and not counting classics like tetris and pacman, probably.....Baldurs Gate?

Posted by sig220 on 07/12/2008 at 12:31AM

Probably Half-Life, but like requiem said not including the stupid education games.

A multitude of DOS games, too many too list

Posted by Cobra951 on 07/12/2008 at 02:04AM

You said "PC games", so I didn't think at first that you were including the 8-bit micros from 30 years ago. My first such game would be Star Raiders on the Atari 400.

Posted by Acerbus on 07/12/2008 at 03:26AM

Hmm. That was a while ago, in the mid 90s. Probably Supaplex, Biomenace or plain old Tetris.

Posted by joeyontheguitar on 07/12/2008 at 04:47AM

It's been a long time since I've played Oregon Trail (my oxen died like mad back then) -- that was probably the first PC game I played. I think I played it at summer school during my kindergarten/first grade years.

Posted by KindGalaxy on 07/12/2008 at 06:02AM

I played Wolf3D when I was 4, that is the first game I can remember playing, was more focused on treasure hunting than killing nazi's and their dogs.

Posted by The Hylden on 07/12/2008 at 06:41AM

Frogger:p

Ah, Oregon Trail. Awesome stuff. Oxen? My peeps were dropping like flies -- gravestones a plenty. Dun, dun, duh dun...

Posted by Sersoft.corp on 07/12/2008 at 07:47AM

Either NFS3, or AoE1.

Unreal

Posted by Wasabi on 07/12/2008 at 09:27AM

My first games... 'Putt-putt', 'Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego' and my favourites 'Lucasarts Adventure Games: Monkey Island, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle'. My uncle gave them to me, and I've loved them ever since.

Posted by KindGalaxy on 07/12/2008 at 10:17AM

Oh geeze Wasabi, those Carmen Sandiago games were great!

Posted by Imonfire on 07/12/2008 at 10:25AM

I think it was WC2 or the first Tomb Raider.

Posted by Keitoyume on 07/12/2008 at 10:27AM

Wolfenstein when I was 3-4ish years old where by at the end of my first gaming session I told my father.

"Daddy I'm tired of killing Nazis, it's your turn."

Posted by Archem on 07/12/2008 at 10:41AM

Well, I can't recall the titles of my first two games, so I'll have to list my third: Oregon Trail. The old one, the one that was just purple on black.

Posted by Imonfire on 07/12/2008 at 10:56AM

Lol at Keitoyume

Fisher Price Bowling and Fire Rescue on two 5 1/2" floppy disks. I was very young, I can't remember when it was.

Posted by Garcian Smith on 07/12/2008 at 03:20PM

Does Granny's Garden count? Far, far scarier than Doom. If not, then er, Doom.

Posted by Lopez on 07/12/2008 at 03:53PM

Whizz Kid for the Amiga. Awesome game, I still play it from time to time. Never completed it though.

Posted by Brendon on 07/12/2008 at 04:04PM

I don't even remember what it was called. I just remember my grandma having this awesome state-of-the-art computer (which now makes me lawl) that had some games on it. It was some top-down adventure type thing; like Zelda but with worse graphics.

Posted by noobman on 07/12/2008 at 04:24PM

I don't remember the first one specifically, but the first games in my "cycle" were Commander Keen, Hocus Pocus, OMF: 2097 and Wacky Wheels. I still occasionally play OMF: 2097 with DosBox. What's great is that a lot of these DOS games are now classified as abandonware, and can be legally downloaded for free off of the Internet.

Posted by Mar on 07/12/2008 at 06:04PM

Sixth Grade Adventures... >_> It was a pretty fun educational game at the time. D;

Posted by Oblivion Lotus on 07/12/2008 at 06:10PM

Ignoring the boring old PC games from Elementary school... Either The Sims or Sim Hospital. And to date those are still the only PC games I've ever played.

Posted by Nick_Fury on 07/12/2008 at 06:38PM

Robot Wars, I believe. Probably about 14 years ago.

Posted by siggs on 07/12/2008 at 06:44PM

Ditto what BingoBango said at the top. From the old Windows game pack, Skifree, or Chips Challenge... what a game :D

Posted by jambo on 07/12/2008 at 08:02PM

Enter message hereprobably something like Stargoose or Raptor. First big game would've been like Wolf3D or Commander Keen.

Posted by Raven on 07/12/2008 at 08:14PM

Most likely Commander Keen in Keen Dreams for DOS.

Posted by southAussie on 07/13/2008 at 03:11AM

3-Demon, Lemmings or Commander Keen.

Not true. It's about as legal as ROMs are. In other words, despite being widely available on the internet and having the myth that they're free floating about, it is illegal to download the software without paying for it. Sure, most of the time, nobody does anything about it, but as far as international copyright laws are concerned, it is illegal.

Some game where apes threw bananas at each other, I think...or maybe the Carmen Sandiego games and Oregon Trail

Posted by Ryan Maffit on 07/13/2008 at 04:21PM

One of the first games I ever played had to have been some chex quest game that came with the box of chex cereal.

"Hellbender" with what I think was one of the first "Force Feedback" Joysticks in those days. After that, "Total Annihilation" and "Terminal Velocity"
