The latest firmware update for the PS3, version 2.40, is apparently causing problems for some PlayStation 3 owners. Reports are coming in from the US PlayStation forums that the newest firmware is causing quite a few lock-ups and freezes on the game console.
The problems may be associated with the earliest versions of the PS3--a similar situation that also surfaced with the release of GTA IV where the loading screen remained frozen during installation.
One forum member described what happened after he updated to firmware 2.40. "Well, I downloaded version 2.40 put in metal gear solid 4 and i get a black screen forever..i cant even get demos to start..I got my Ps3 on Launch day..So my warrenty (sp) is out now..Any advice? I can take a vid if anyone wants."
One user said that his PS3 power button was disabled after the 2.40 update. "The screen just stays blank, I've tried the keeping the on button pressed trick, but it doesn't help, switching to component video, also no output .... anyone advise?"
In the Eurogamer.com forums, a member contacted Sony directly and was told that the update apparently corrupts the data on the PS3's hard drive.
"I rang them (same problem) and a replacement PS3 is coming tomorrow - it may be the hard drive apparantly, which is corrupted by the update according to the fella I spoke to. They were really helpful so give them a ring!"
At the moment, the incidents of firmware 2.40 crashing PS3s is varied but do seem to be substantiated by the reports that are coming in. No official word from Sony has come out yet on the problem.

Watched a friend install this last night. Seemed to work fine for his. At least, while we were playing CoD4 everything seemed swell.
@ article- Pretty serious bugs to encounter after a friggin' hour of waiting for it to simply download at all.....
it happened to me, darn thing crashed and I haven't tried it since.
I've got the early 60GB PS3 model, so I think I'll sit it out until they figure out how to fix this.
Now they've pulled it.
How does this kind of crap keep happening? The 360 also suffers from problems with updates all the time, although that has more typically been game updates (instead of dashboard updates). As a programmer, I can't conceive of any reason other than negligence in testing.
"...As a programmer, I can't conceive of any reason other than negligence in testing...."
Or lack thereof. The testing department of many game companies is usually the least respected or planned out. The idea is that testers are just there to "play games" all day while the exact opposite is true. As a result, while the function of testing is one of the most important things a game company can do to protect themselves, the least amount of money is spent there.
They hire lots of guys off the street that couldn't tell a bug from a hole in the wall and this is why major bugs like the GTA IV fiasco and this update slip through the cracks...cracks that are as big as a truck.
wow every body is having problems with with each new update.
crashing in 5 seconds.
everybody aint perfect
Good thing I saw this before going online to the ps store. Thanx guys.
