Cliffy B says "No" to the ways of MGS

Well, Kojima has certainly caused quite a stir with his subtle quip directed towards the 360 contained in MGS4.  First, the MGS series has taken fire from a Bad Company trailer.  Now, the series is taking fire from Cliffy B.

Cliff Bleszinski, the lead designer of Gears of War, was quoted as saying MGS is a type of game that Epic would not touch with a ten-foot pole.  "Metal Gear Solid is our example of the game we're not doing," he stated.  "Passive entertainment is on its way out."

Now, what does this mean?  As Cliffy B was very vague with his wording, it's impossible to decide what aspect of the franchise he was referring to, and what exactly "passive entertainment" is.  Maybe he was referring to stealth.  Perhaps he was making a reference to the ridiculously long cut scenes that are almost an MGS trademark.  Possibly a combination of the two.

Regardless of what Cliffy B meant, it is likely that if a concept sounds vaguely like MGS, Epic will not be making it.

i think he means passive by boring, ive always found mgs fun but still boring, while gears has always kept me entertained

wow who cares mgs is a good game. epic is just talking a bunch of bs.
Cliffy will never be half as good as Kojima. so talk all the crap he wants. just be happy at being 2nd okay.
gears of war is fun but not to deep.
shallow people like shallow games.

That is a closed minded ignorant thing for a great game developer to say. Must say I'm a bit shocked at that. I would love to see a more thought provoking Epic game. Actually, I would like to see more genre defining, stellar games period. And MGS4 was one of them.

id have to say that mgs4 was the exact opposite

When the controller spends more time sitting in your lap over the course of the game than it does in your hands, I'd call that a rather passive experience. And MGS4 is most certainly that, from what I've seen.

It's not deep, it's overly wordy and carries an air of self-gratifying pretentiousness.
Yes, I as well don't mind deeper gameplay experiences. Treasures like Baldur's Gate and Fallout gave me that. MGS gives me a taste of a deep experience, and then snatches it away and talks my ear off for the next half-hour.

He meant the cutscene-heavy design of the series. I'm sure of it, and i agree with him. Stuff I sit back and watch for more than a couple of minutes belongs in movies, not games.

There are those who want to experience finely directed cutscenes that move the story along in a more emotional matter, and there are people who dont want to see that and just play and play and play with no interruptions.

Notice that he DIDN'T say that Metal Gear Solid is a bad game. He just said that's not the type of game that he's interested in making. That's hardly closed minded or ignorant.
