If there was ever a question that could spark a hot internet debate, this is it.
In my time as a gamer, I've seen many videogame consoles come and go, as sure as the sun rises and sets each day. The one thing that remains the same is the fan support. Every console will have its diehard followers and its bitter opponents, but in the end, each one plays games relatively the same way as the others, and it's really the software that counts. So my question to you is this:
Do you have an all-time favorite console? Which one?
I admit that I love asking these questions, yet I hate answering them. Indecision is a killer, so I'm just going to spit something out, even if I may change my mind later. I'll go with the Nintendo 64 because it introduced the third dimension to videogames in the biggest way and came along at the perfect time in my life for me to enjoy videogames to the fullest. Obviously the N64 isn't the best system of all time, and I could list a whole slew of its flaws, but it did have some of the best games in history, reintroduced the analog stick to gaming, and focused on playing videogames in a social setting. Good times.

SNES
I'm kinda spit between the SNES and the Wii... The SNES has some of the best games I've ever played... and the wii plays them... along with several other generations... and previous competitors...
DREAMCAST DREAMCAST DREAMCAST..
Unless you count the PSP.
Though question...
I'd say the most important console for everybody is the first one they got when they were little kids, the one either your parents or Santa gave you, that shiny box that appeared behind a mysterious wrap paper that you'd rip off with anxious fingers. Leaving playability, graphics quality and the fun of the games apart, what really matters is the console that introduces you to the world of gaming, and the younger you are, the better it is in your point of view.
In my case, Santa brought me an Odyssey 2 in 1981, and despite how primitive were its graphics, how slow the thing was and how limited its game library was, it was undoubtely the best gift an 8 year old kid like me could get at the time.
Except the Atari 2600. Mfff. Noo. I never felt envious of Pitfall. No way. Nooo.
N64. My first, and so many awesome games. OoT, Battletanx: GA, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Banjo-Tooie, Nuclear Strike, and so many others.
I would say the SNES. Aside from introducing the diamond shape of buttons still found on the Sony and Microsoft controllers it was just a really solid system. It started Nintendo's tradition of reinventing their brands every hardware generation and was the first system to have really refined games. Super Mario World improved upon the format invented in Mario 3. A Link To The Past combined everything that was great from the first two Zelda titles. Also the ammount of detail had just come arround where character models were more defined.
Also, Zombies Ate My Neighbors is on that system so it gets bonus points.
The 360 would be a pretty close second for having a mostly logical operating system and seamless Internet intergration with the ability to deliver lots of content directly to your box.
Wii. It's all of my favorite retro consoles in one.
My favourite system ever is the Nintendo DS... But I imagine the question refers to the bigger ones. Hmm... Nope. Nothing else comes close to how much I love the DS.
N64 or PS1
PC
>_>
I would have to say the SNES or the PS2. The snes brought Street Fighter 2 home from the arcades. Games like Castlevania 4, and Crono Trigger changed the way I feel about games. Not having to Imagine a block on the screen as a character was nice, too. The PS2 was a real monster. The 3D console era that the ps1 tried was perfected by the PS2. Tekken Tag is still one of the greatest 3D fighters, It let Metal Gear show what it is made of (remember the horrible sniper mission from slow camera movement due to lack of power). And it still refuses to believe console cycles should be 5 years long. Thank you PS2.
take something in between snes, n64, and ps1 and you've got yourselves a winner
Impossible to answer. The best games ever are out now, and those don't run on the classic consoles. But the question is not that simple, is it? I'm sure you meant how good each console is/was during its own time. I'll have to stay away from specifics and give the general nod to Nintendo. The NES, SNES and N64 are responsible for my best memories, in particular the last 2. The GC was terrific as well, and the Wii does a great job of playing and displaying my GC collection, in addition to the handful of worthwhile native titles. I was playing Zelda OoT Master Quest on it a scant 3 weeks ago, an N64 game ported to the GC and running at 480p on the Wii.
My best memories probably lie with the N64 and the great times playing multiplayer fare such as Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, Forsaken, and Star Fox. Plus, it had greatness like OoT and Majora's Mask to play when alone.
As of now, for me, Xbox 360.... games have never been this good. Sure their are classic games I love on NES, SNES, PS1, N64 and so forth... I've bought the most games on the 360 than I have on any other console, and enjoy them alot more.
That's a toughie, but I'd have to pick the SNES due to it being home to so many of my all-time favorites. Pus, Super Mario All-Stars had SMB3. Can't beat that.
I didn't have anything like a snes, not really old enough. But i would say Dreamcast, becasue i'm a bit of a SEGA fanboi.
But thats not a definitive answer, id have to give it a lot more thought now....

I hear ya. I bounce back and forth a lot, myself.
