Fighting games seem cyclical in nature, rising and falling in popularity by an invisible schedule.
In the early 90s Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat reigned supreme (with King of Fighters and Virtua Fighter on the up and up), then other games took over, then Mortal Kombat came back, then it left, then Virtua Fighter got popular again, etc. But no matter how good (or bad) recent titles in a series are, all gamers have that one fighting series that they value above all others.
What is your favorite fighting franchise?
There are many to choose from. Do you enjoy the over-the-top fatalities of Mortal Kombat? Do you like the licensing of Marvel vs Capcom? Are you a technical purist giggling with joy when you play Virtua Fighter? Are you one of those people who considers Smash Bros. a fighting game?
(I don't want to give away my answer, but let's just say I had a figurine of Sub-Zero on my desk for a few years.)

Smash Bros, though Soulcaliber is awesome.
street fighter
Used to love Tekken. The characters were just awesome/
Smash Bros.
Dead or Alive.
A-B-A-C-A-B-B. That I can still recite the mortal kombat blood code tells you I was a MK guy a while back. I still have a certain affinity for those characters. I am looking forword to Street Fighter Two Turbo HD Remix though.
Franchise? SSB, favorite fighting game? Mortal Kombat 2.
Screw you guys.
Virtua Fighter.
Hmm... Either Smash Bros. or Soul Caliber. I guess SC wins for traditional style fighting, but Smash Bros. wins for how it mixes things up so successfully.
Oh, and this is coming from someone who can't get into fighting games. These two series' are almost the only ones good enough for me to enjoy.
Soul Calibur!
Tekken or DoA. The 4th installment of each is also the best.
Soul Calibur. The soul burns forever!
I used to enjoy Tekken and Soul Caliber... Virtua Fighter 4 was good... But My favorite is Smash Bros.
Street Fighter 2. By far. Now for 3d, you can't beat Soul Calibur or Virtua Fighter. Button mashing will get you killed in any one of them.
I'm a firm believer in the combo system, but button mashing can still whoop some ass in Soul Cal. (not saying i do)
How did I miss this?
Street Fighter (II)
probably tekken as far as traditional fighting goes, but if smash bros. qualifies i'm all about it.
I can't forget street fighter though
mortal kombat or street fighter
