Remember that BioShock film rumor we reported back in January? Apparently the rumor was 100% true because Pirates of the Carribean director Gore Verbinski is all set to direct and produce the movie adaptation of BioShock.
Screenwriter John Logan (Sweeny Todd, The Aviator, The Last Samurai) is currently in talks to write the film's screenplay. Publisher Take-Two Interactive will receive a "multimillion-dollar advance against gross points on the film."
The director said that a release date has yet to be planned but will start pre-production as soon as Logan can write the script. In addition, Verbinski noted that the game's setting design and characters (particularly the Big Daddys and Little Sisters) inspired him to create the game into film.
Verbinski said, ""I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential. Of all the games I've played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative."
Don't forget, a game sequel is also in the works, which is expected for release in 2009.
I'm particularly pumped to see how Verbinski will adapt the game onto the big screen considering his use of over-the-top visuals and atmosphere. Hopefully his run of PG-13 films with the Pirates of the Carribean films won't leave the BioShock film in bad taste.

if you're gonna use the mpaa ratings as guides here than feel free to realize that verbinski's pg-13 works are far superior to his r-rated works... (not that he has a huge track record to begin with...)
its interesting to me though to see that there are a few directors that are getting involved in gaming franchises, either making games (spielberg) or adapting them to movies (verbinski) or just being generally involved in some vague and mysterious way (jackson).
This may also be a catalyst to get a halo movie deal done (since that sounds like it was the big holdup with the distributors the first time round...). It'll be interesting to see what kind of deal take 2 gets and if it will help along those talks with microsoft or not (considering this is more than likely to be the first biggish video game to movie with solid backing (if this is really true and it gets done...)).
Mannnnnnn...
I WANT to be excited, but since its a VG movie, I know how this will end: with my heart broken and my brand new tattoo disgraced.
Verbinski could do awesome things with this material.
Hell, he could turn a theme park ride into one of the best flicks of the past decade..
