Wal-Mart to support Blu-ray

Category: Industry, Posted: 02/15/2008 at 12:49PM CST by Billy Wang, Previews Editor

walmartlogoThis week can't be good for the HD DVD camp; first Netflix, then Best Buy, then possibly Toshiba, now Wal-Mart? According to consumer electronics blog Check Out, which is comprised of several Wal-Mart employees, the largest grocery retailer in the U.S. will drop HD DVD support and will exclusively sell Blu-ray products.

Susan Chronister, a buyer in Wal-Mart's video division, said that by June, Wal-Mart will only carry and sell Blu-ray movies and hardware players. This can't spell good news for HD DVD fans and supporters. When the world's largest online DVD rental service (Netflix), the largest electronics retailer in the U.S. (Best Buy) and the largest grocery retailer in the U.S. (Wal-Mart) begin to support Blu-ray in just one week, you know it's over.

Chronister gives some suggestions on what to do with your HD players, "So... if you bought the HD player like me, I'd retire it to the bedroom, kid's playroom, or give it to your parents to play their John Wayne standard def movies, and make space for a BD player for your awesome Hi Def experience."

Sorry folks but like the saying goes, "When you can't beat them, join them."

Billy, there are Wal-Marts everywhere around here. Where have you been?

Where else can you buy a box of Capri Sun for less than $2 along with contact solution, a copy of Lego Star Wars 2 for 360, and a nice sweater?
