In the latest installment of Iwata Asks with SSBB lead Masahiro Sakurai, Sakurai and the Nintendo president talk about Brawl's single story mode, The Space Emissary; more specifically, the storyline included in it.
Sakurai mentions the difficulties he first faced with the idea (there are a bunch of varying characters in the game, after all) as well as his own initial aversion to the idea of a singleplayer story mode. After realizing he wanted to use the side-scrolling aspect from the previous Smash Bros. game as a start-off point, Sakurai once again faced the challenge of figuring out a way to make the characters coexist, and to make a story make sense. Enter Kazushige Nojima, the man behind the story in games such as Final Fantasy VII and Kingdom Hearts.
"At that point, I decided to ask Kazushige Nojima-san to help us since he had composed the scenarios for titles like Final Fantasy VII," Sakurai tells Iwata. In typical Iwata fashion, he replies, "Wow, asking the person who crafted scenarios for Final Fantasy to write one for Smash Bros. is a pretty big deal."
Despite his credentials, Nojima's first draft wasn't exactly the stuff fanboy dreams are made of. "Some of the characters are on a bus on the way to the stadium. Samus is there. Donkey Kong is there and Snake is watching the bus from afar."
Eventually Nojima and Sakurai worked together to form a more agreeable story behind Space Emissary, and thus the mode was born.
If you haven't been reading Iwata Asks, I'd highly recommend you catch up on it. It's entertaining, and you never quite know when you'll learn that your sixth grade creative writing project was better than the work of the man behind Final Fantasy VII's plot.

talk about unnecessary. Its kinda of like when you go see Bring it On for the chearleader routines but ur shoved a crappy story to go along with it. You dont care about that you just want to see the routines!
Ahem.....yea.
Finally we'll get a real explaination on why Snake is fighting Mario who's fighting Link who's fighting Sonic who's fighting Donkey Kong who's fighting Pikachu, who's fighting Princess Peach who's fighting Wario... oh wait... FFVII had a really fucking confusing story... we're boned.
I'm sure it'll be just as good as the best 70s pizza boy-delivery/full service pornography.
I think it's a admirable idea to bring in the writer who brought us such a great story. (Just hope we don't have to see Mario get stabbed and then the world will cry). With this whole "Subspace Emissary" story they're trying to make the franchise more in depth like many other fighting games.
I for one think it'll be a good story, and not nearly as confusing as Final Fantasy 7's was. (Though I did understand it at the time). I'd be surprised if most are against this move, as many hail FF7 as the greatest Final Fantasy ever. (On my list it's tied for first with FF5, 8 and 10).
Yeah we all just wanna get our hands all over Brawl as soon as possible, but they don't want to give us the shallow, meaning less hook up.(Not always a bad thing though) They want us players to have a deep, meaningful experience. One that will last much longer and be better.
Also if it were being written by an American then yeah, I'd at best expect it to be as good as the writing as porn. However this guy helped write a very good engrossing story, and I'll just say his first draft was just one of laziness.
If they're spending even more than a moments time worrying about Smash Bros. story, than they are missing the point of the series altogether. The whole idea of the series is that it makes no sense, but it's fun anyways.
@requiem
...roflcopter.
Oh yeah, and this Masahiro Sakurai guy looks like he's about 23...how old was he when he wrote FFVII!? If my estimation was correct, that would have made him a shade over 14... (Obviously he must be older, but the point stands, the guy looks youthful.)
Hideo Kojima looks youthful too, and he's been bringing us Metal Gear for 20 years.
And I didn't find FF7's story confusing in the least.
FFVII story; Jenova is revived by Gast who works for Shinra who Avalanche fights who Cloud Joined who imitates Zack who loves Aerith who loves Cloud who hates Sephiroth who was fathered by Hojo who works for Shinra who exploits the life stream that is corrupted by the remnants who were created by Jenova who killed the cetra who Aerith is the last of who is killed by Sephiroth who is 'killed' by Cloud. yeah. not confusing >.
