Media publishing company Forbes named Nvidia its 2007 Company of the Year.
Forbes pointed to the company's four year rise to dominance; Nvidia currently controls 62% of the desktop graphics processor market. In addition, Nvidia increased its gross margin from a mere 29% in 2004 to a current 46%. In just a few weeks, Nvidia will report gross revenue of $4 billion, up 33% and net profit of $900 million, up 50%.
Current Nvidia Chief Executive Jen-Hsun Huang took the company public in 1999 and its stock has risen over 2100% since. Darn, it looks like I should have bought some stock back then.
While Nvidia is well-known for its work in the PC hardware field, they're also working on other aspects, such as hardware support for the PlayStation 3 and non-gaming aspects such as Google Earth. Nvidia hopes that applying its graphical hardware to web applications like Google Earth will foster its popularity.
Huang said, "What if Google Earth had a 3-D representation of every single building, every single square meter on Earth, and you could access it in the blink of an eye? Take the Forbidden City in China. I know the model exists. We've seen the models. It is photorealistic. It is cinematic. It is breathtaking. All of those experiences are possible already."
