Analysts predict Nintendo will lose $1 billion in Wii shortages

Category: Wii, Posted: 12/15/2007 at 01:27AM CST by Billy Wang, Previews Editor

nintendowiiWhile we've all heard about the holiday Wii shortages, a few industry analysts are predicting that Nintendo will lose an excess of over $1 billion due to the shortages.

Sales are certainly picking up for the Wii; Nintendo sold 981,000 Wiis in the U.S. last month. But according to James Lin, senior analyst at the MDB Capital Group, Nintendo lost out on a lot of potential sales; "they could easily sell double what they're selling." Along with other industry experts, Lin believes that Nintendo will lose out on more than $1 billion this holiday due to the Wii shortages.

George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing for Nintendo of America, doesn't believe Nintendo has made any mistakes when judging the Wii demand but revealed some nervousness about competitors swiping Wii players away.

"We do worry about not satisfying consumers and that they will drift to a competitor's system."

It's really depressing to see no Wiis in any store. It's almost like the darned thing has yet to come out. I haven't seen it on the shelf for sale since.. well its release.

Well, of course they're not worried about consumers drifing. Most of the people who actually buy games probably only have this as their secondary console, with 360 and/or PS3 being primary.

the thing is, when they say "Easily Sell double", they sont seem to understand that they cant produce double! Sheesh.

YA- I doubt that.

The Wii has sold 14 million units in its first year compared to the 13 million the 360 has sold in its first year.

Sorry, I mean in its *first* two years.

I still have a few friends who have been trying to get a wii for a long time but can't find them. Much more important than the hypothetical billion dollars is each new wii makes the potential wii game market that much bigger and a heck of a lot easier for 3rd parties to justify spending the money on a big budget title. In the long run games, game, games, are what matter.

TBH I don't think nintendo is that worried. They actually make money on the Wii itself and retailers are bopping the wii prices up. I reckon it's to a) cash in and b) make up the difference of the loss' on sony stock.

There are actually quite a few Wii's available where I live. The only thing is that they are at secondary retailers, those guys who go into Best Buy and buy the full stock on shipment day only to take them back to their store and charge $500 for em. Effing Criminals I say!
